I am thrilled that my calligraphy artwork has been awarded a Shūsaku Prize (秀作 Excellent Work) at the 74th Shokaisha Exhibition 第74回 書海社展 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, situated inside Ueno Park. The exhibition ran from the 28th January to 3rd February at the bustling museum. This annual exhibition of shodо̄ calligraphy features several large rooms of works by contemporary calligraphers, exhibiting various styles and primarily large scale calligraphy. This year’s selection included prominent 隷書 reisho (clerical style) works and pieces mounted on 屏風 byо̄bu screens.

After many months of preparation for this event, I was glad, and somewhat relieved, to be exhibiting shodō calligraphy for the second year in a row in Japan. I chose the poem 游悟真寺 Yūgoshinji by 白楽天 Hakurakuten (Ch. Bai Juyi) to brush in kaisho (standard script). After the awards ceremony I gave a short speech thanking my teacher Tanimura Shundо̄, and exhibition organisers for selecting my work. Deepest thanks also to my family and supporters for helping make this possible.
